Chelseys speech draft

Chelsey Schmitt                                                                                                                                                February 22, 2013

A lot of people do not realize that there are many great reasons to dance. Some of these reasons include the physical aspect, the life lessons and the amount of entertainment it brings. There are various great outcomes that come along with dancing.

The first great outcome of dance is the physical aspect. Dancing strongly increases endurance and cardio from doing it repeatedly again and again. It also increases balance, posture, muscle tone and flexibility. Co-ordination is another benefit that comes from dance since you have to be thinking about everything your body is doing and making sure its correct. For example, if you are doing a turn, you need to be focussing on your arm position, posture and leg placement. The best physical aspect of dance is the great exercise you get out of it, because it’s a fun way to stay fit and healthy!

The second great outcome to dance is all the great life lessons you learn. You have to learn how to work well and connect with others in your group. If you do not connect with them and just do your own thing, the dance will not be nearly as good. You also learn responsibility and how to respect your competitors. You have a responsibility to your group and have to make sure you are always pulling your weight; otherwise, you will let your group down.  Another thing that will help you in life is the confidence building you get from dancing and competitions. You learn how to become more confident because you have to perform on stage in front of large numbers of people, and eventually you gain confidence from people watching you. You can take these skills that you learn and apply them to the real world in how you deal with people in your career or social environments.

The final great outcome to dance is the entertainment value. You get to meet lots of new people from the studio and from competitions that you become great friends with for life. It’s great to do what you love with amazing friends. It’s also lots of fun because you get to travel and compete in many great places as well as getting to bond with everyone in your studio. You can learn from older dancers and teachers as well as teach younger dancers. In my opinion, the best part of dance is competing in competitions.  I enjoy competing because I’m very competitive ad really enjoy winning because it shows that all of my hard work and passion was worth it.

Taking all of these reasons into consideration, I believe dance is a great activity that keeps you in shape, builds great values and has many different positive benefits.

Hey! So here is my speech. Feel free to leave any comments and suggestions on what I can do to make it better! Hope you like it!

Dreams
Everyone knows that when you go to sleep you dream, but how well do you really know dreams? Dreams have been part of the human psych since before recorded time. They are images, thoughts, sounds, and voices that can include places you have been, people you know, people you have met or even just people you have seen before. It is believed that we all dream every night even though you may think you do not, but really you just do not remember your dream.

There are many theories to why people dream and it is said that dreaming is a way to establish rapport between our inner and outer self offering us access to the wisdom of our soul. One theory is that when you are at school, home, or anywhere else, you have so many thoughts going on that you can not think of it all so when you dream, you dream your last minute or forgotten thoughts. Some therapists and other specialists believe that dreams are a means for our subconscious mind to keep itself active, and that dreams can strengthen the connections between areas of the brain.

Dreams can provide huge roles in our lives. They can reflect all expects of life, and can have different purposes at different times. Some people have thought that dreams can predict the future. It is proven that it can help if you record your dreams when you wake in the morning. Recording your dreams helps because you can see what you dreamed in the past and then make connections with your present dreams.

Besides dreaming at night, people can also have nightmares. A nightmare is actually a dream that results in feelings of strong terror, fear, distress or extreme anxiety. Most nightmares may be a reaction to stress, however, frequent nightmares becomes a disorder when it impairs social, occupational and other important areas of function. You can stop nightmares by medication but almost everyone has nightmares from time to time.

So in conclusion, remember these facts the next time you dream and you might uncover something about yourself that you never knew existed.

Jessica's public speaking video

Jessica's Digital Life Response

I agree that digital life has changed who we are but it isn't necessarily in a bad way. For example that fact that we have GPS can be a good thing so we don't get lost while driving. The fact that our life revolves around the digital world is out of our control and we can't really change it. You can choose on your own not to let it effect you but you will be on your own while the digital life improves and you will be left behind not knowing all the new technology.

Brianna's Response to 'Digital Life' Video

Okay, I've finally figured this whole blog thing out! I know this is a bit late, but here is my opinion on the Digital Life video:

The video, Digital Life, was created by a history teacher in Hawaii. The title basically gives you an idea of what the video is about: humans and their relationship with, and dependency on modern-day technology. I, for one, completely agree with the message she is giving through the video, as it is very easy to see really how much humans depend on their electronic devices. In this video, she sings a lot about how we've become so much more dependent on our phones, apps, and even things like GPS. This is very true, as I think many of us are losing our social functions as human beings...I mean, why would you actually go talk to your friend when you can text them instead? This is how many people (particulary teenagers and young adults) feel when it comes to being social. Even strange lingo from the Internet has somehow made its way into our speech. Do you ever people going around saying 'OMG' or 'LOL'? Of course you have! However, it's very unlikely you would have seen people saying that, say, 30 years ago, when there was no Internet. Even when Twitter started up in 2006, people started going #hashtag #crazy! I remember being confused when I first joined Twitter...'Why do people have number signs in front of their words? Is that really necessary?'

The part I really found interesting about the video is that she mentioned the idea that technology might change our biology. Could human beings adapt themselves to become even more suited to technology? I suppose her suggestion could come true...if you look at it this way, who is more tech savvy? Grandparents or teenagers? This generation was kind of born into the tech age, so it's easy to see why maybe teens are used to it and grandparents may still be adjusting. But what happens when users of this new technology start becoming younger and younger? Nowadays, you can see 6-year olds with iPhones (I've seen a few!) or iPods. What happens when babies are being born ready to tweet and go "#hashtag #crazy"? It kind of crazy if you think about it, but this just may become the case in the near future as technology becomes even more advanced.

Overall, I thought this was a great video, and I thought the teacher brought up a great point, which allows the tech savvy to think, 'How dependent am I really, when it comes to my phone?' We may not think much of it when we Instagram pictures of everything we eat, or tweet 24/7, but she shows us how really dependent we are on our technology. I know I rarely go on Twitter or Instagram, but I agree with her point 101%. It was a great watch! :)

Winki's digital life response

I agree with the "Digital life" video and what its message is to the people today. Technology is rapidly growing today and making humans much more reliant on the convenience of it. "Technology has changed who we are" today from who we are in the past.

Hannah's "Digital Life" Response

I completely agreed with the message that "Digital Life" was sending its viewers. Even though the tone of the video was pretty lighthearted, I thought it communicated a very important lesson to our generation. Digital life is changing who we are. Instead of talking with our family at dinner, we're on our phones, texting, or waiting until we could get back to our computer screens. Instead of communicating with friends in real life, we message them, or tweet at them. Most of our interpersonal skills are being lost due to technology! And, the thing about social networking sites is that they are just so very good at sucking us in and eventually becoming the center of our obsessions. People on Facebook may have thousands of friends on their account, but in real life, they may only know half of them.

"And now we tweet and blog and hashtag all our thoughts." It has become so easy for people to find information online, that nowadays, "google" has become a verb! Yes, this is extremely useful for researching projects. But people tend to post far too much personal info about themselves and their daily life online and on social networking sites. Anyone with wifi could access some of the things people post. How many times have we all heard stories about cyberstalkers, or pedophiles hiding behind their computer screens posing as thirteen year old girls? The internet is a huge part of our everyday lives, but I feel that sometimes we need to know when to draw the line and keep the two separate.

Like Ruvini, I also noticed the identical background music from "Video Killed the Radio Star" and the 2010 single "Check It Out" by Nicki Minaj ft. will.i.am. I think that these videos contrast the two generations very well, and not necessarily in a good way!

"Digital life" response

I agree with the message that she i trying to say. i agree that "digital life" has changed who we are but not nessasarily in a bad way. With the advance in technology in the past few years i belive that us as humans have also advanced greatly and we have found new ways of comunication and ways to get things done. I dont belive our world would be as productive and not as many thing would get done if we did not have this digitl life. Wether we like it or not i think this digital life will continue to grow and become part of us so i belive we should grow with it and learn from it. If people do not acccept it then i feel they will be left behind as the world of technology carries on .As a conclusion, in my opinion digital life is having a postive effect on the world today!

"Digital Life" Response

I wholly agree with the message this Hawaiian teacher is expressing in her video, "Digital Life", and I believe it is a major issue in today’s society. Just as technology is growing, the anti-technology movement is very visible in action. People are being more and more cautious to accept rapidly growing technology, because some side effects are becoming clear. For example, people tend to care more about their life online that their real life. We are losing our interpersonal skills, along with simple skills like grammar, spelling, and mental math. In addition, things that would have been pointless ten years ago are the center of our lives.  For example, we care about how many followers we have over how many real friends we have. As well, there is this big concept and feeling that if you don’t post it, it didn't happen. This increases our desire to spend time on social media online, rather than in reality. Furthermore, many young children are being exposed to technology, which can stunt their development, and cause other problems.

Youth are becoming more and more dependent on technology, which can diminish their social skills.

Personally, as much as I enjoy and use technology on a daily basis, I am skeptical about its effects on us in the long run. Will we be a brand new species of humans? Will we lose the ability to problem-solve, communicate face-to-face, or even have common sense? What are the health risks of being dependent on technology? These questions create a sense of uncertainty of how beneficial technology really is. Therefore, I agree with the intentional message of the video; that we should approach rapidly growing technology with great care. In comparison to the first video “Video Killed the Radio Star” by the Buggles, in 1979, it is evident that we are having the same sort of issues and doubt in 2013. No matter how much culture changes over the years, for most of the part society revolves around the same ideas and in turn, the same problems. The messages in both videos are consistent, bringing up the challenges that come with new technology.

Additionally, there is another point in the original video that supports the fact that even if culture changes, some ideas and values are passed on. To elaborate, if you listen closely to the opening of the song, it has the same background music (ignore the lyrics) as this newer song a few years back called “Check It Out”, by Nicki Minaj ft. Will.i.am! This was the first thing I realized when I watched the “Video Killed the Radio Star” video, and it amazed me. Here’s the video (viewer discretion advised, for offensive language):

Response to Video Killed the Radio Star Parody

In many senses, the parody and the origional version of the song have the same messages, this message is how technology is progressing over time. The question is, is this a good thing or a bad thing? I personally am on the fence about this whole topic. I believe that progressing in technology is a good thing because it can help a lot of people such as technology helping with medical breakthroughs, but I also think that things can go a bit too far. I mean a phone that you can have conversations with? I don't see much of a point in that. I personally don't let things like twitter and facebook run my life, but many people all ages do, this video told the truth in my opinion and although technology can be good for some things, most technology is pointless. Instead of playing outside and exploring like I did when I was a child, kids these days sit at home on the computer or tv. I was at the mall a few months ago and saw a baby in a stroller playing with an iPad! If that's not crazy, then I don't know what is. The point is, that yes technology can be good, but it shouldn't be made available to people who are going to ruin their lives with it.
